Basic Steps in Powder Coating

Powder coating is easy. You have to use an electrostatic gun but it is not rocket science. What’s great is that you can achieve the color that you want in a matter of minutes. And unlike painting, it is eco-friendly and user-friendly.

Here are four simple steps that you can follow to do powder coating in Ontario.

  • Sandblast. Sandblasting the metal before powder coating Ontario is necessary. This first step cleans all debris stuck in the metal. The force of the blast strips all unwanted particles that may cause bumpiness after powder coating. It is also a way to pre-heat the metal. Remember that if you fail at sandblasting, the outcome will not be as pleasant as you imagined it to be. You can use a corona gun and sand to clean the metal. You can also choose from other biodegradable options aside from sand. Also, the metal is vulnerable after sandblasting so you’ll have to keep it in an arid environment to keep it from rusting.
  • Pretreatment. Pretreatment with chemical is an optional method. However, if you are a clever person, you will do this step. It prolongs the life of the metal by fighting off corrosion. It also cleans the metal surface thoroughly.
  • Wash. Wash the metal with clean water in a quick manner. Do not prolong this step. Then, let it dry on a clean surface. Be sure that you dry it completely before powder coating it. This way you won’t be having issues about stacking powder because of the moist on the metal surface.
  • Powder Coat. It would be best if you start off with a zinc primer. This reacts with the metal surface electrostatically. The charges combine and unlike painting, this base can be peeled off once bumped to another object so you have to be cautious with your movement. The interesting part though is the fact that there is no way that the prime coating will be applied too thickly. This is because the charge of metal only reacts to a limited charge distributed throughout the first coating. Once it settles, no matter how long you coat an area, the powder will just come off.

Heat the metal piece after and let the primer settle. Afterwards, take it back in the powder coating room to do the finishing. You can choose whatever color you want. Apply the coating in the same procedure as the first session and after making sure that you’ve covered everything, you can put it back in the oven again for 15 to 20 minutes.

There are many powder coating Ontario shops. If you are not confident about the whole process or you don’t have the proper equipment and materials, you can avail to their services. In doing so, specify the finishing color that you like. However, before you take in any offer, make sure that you inspect their equipment to find out if they can deliver a great quality. A skilled worker is nothing without his tools and hi-tech tools are useless without capable workers.

Powder coated my old boat this spring instead of painting it. Can't wait to see how much better it is!
