There are four main families of thermosetting powders which are commonly used. Here is a breakdown of the different types:

Epoxy Powder Coatings: these coatings offer excellent corrosion resistance, adhesion, abrasion, and toughness, making them ideal for materials that will be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time. They make up for about 7% of world powder coating production.

Polyester Powder Coatings: perfect for decorative components, polyester powder coatings offer high performance mechanical properties and heat resistance, even when exposed to outside elements. This is why they are widely used for automotive trim components and other exterior applications. In addition, TGIC-free polyester powders are the top choice as a powder coating in Ontario for buildings to help mitigate health and environmental effects. They make up the majority of powder coating production at about 36%.

Polyurethane Powder Coatings: these powder coats offer great physical and chemical characteristics as well as excellent exterior durability. Moreover, polyurethanes have superior gloss retention abilities and resistance to corrosion and humidity, making it suitable for thin film applications. Polyurethanes account for less than 2% of powder coating production.

Acrylic Powder Coatings: making up only about 3% of powder coating production, acrylic has good colour and gloss retention abilities, and has excellent heat and alkali resistance. As such, they are normally specified for decorative applications and applications that require resistance to harmful UV rays.
