The Powder Coating Process

Powder coating Ontario is a coat applied as free-flowing, dry powder. It differs with conventional liquid in that it doesn’t require solvents bind and fill in liquid form.  Here, the coating is undertaken electrostatically and cured to form the skin. It involves a 3 step process:

Part preparation

This is also referred to as the pre-treatment and it involves the removal of dirt, metal oxides and lubrication greases. Different chemical and mechanical methods can be used to do this. The method to be used depends on the material and size of the part to be worked on. In chemical pretreatment, phosphates and chromates are used in spray application. This process helps in cleaning and improving the bonds of the powder. Abrasive blasting on the other hand provides surface texturing. However, the chemical composition, density and impact resistance has to be considered first.

Powder application

There are many ways of applying powder which is the second step in powder coating in Ontario. The most common one is the use of sprays. A positive electrical charge is imparted to the powder by the use of a gun and acceleration is done towards the piece being worked on.

Curing

Crosslinking as this process is often referred to, requires temperatures of 200 degrees Celsius for ten minutes for it to carry out a full curing process. The schedule can however be varied depending on the manufacturers wishes. Infrated ovens and convection cure ovens can be used in the application of the energy. However, the former is known for taking less time in carrying out the curing process.

4way metal fabrications have taken powder coating for Ontario to another level by introducing quality systems in doing this. It’s a combination which saves on both time and money in the hope of meeting the desires of different categories of clients.
